Same sex accommodation
Declaration of commitment to delivering same sex accommodation (DSSA)
Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is committed to ensuring the privacy and dignity of patients and delivering same sex accommodation within its hospitals.
We are working to introduce the following standards:
• Ensuring that men and women do not have to sleep in the same room
• Ensuring that men and women do not have to share toilet and washing facilities
• Ensuring men and women should not have to pass through areas used by the opposite sex to reach their own facilities.
Same sex accommodation is being provided in:
• Same sex wards, where the whole ward is occupied by men or women only
• Single rooms, or
• Wards where men and women are in separate bays or rooms
We recognise that there will be some circumstances where men and women will need to be treated together such as for urgent/emergency treatment, specialised or high-tech care (with one-to-one nursing). A policy is in place to ensure people are moved to same sex accommodation as soon as clinically possible.
In 2010 we are moving the two Peterborough-based hospitals (Peterborough District Hospital and Edith Cavell Hospital) onto one site. The new Peterborough City Hospital will be compliant with the same sex accommodation programme. However, until the new hospital opens we are making changes to some areas both in the Peterborough Hospitals and at Stamford Hospital to ensure same sex accommodation is available for most patients by the end of December 2009.
